Moses Malone and the Spurs

By the time he signed with the San Antonio Spurs, Moses Malone was a mere shadow of the player he once was in the NBA. Malone was playing in his 21st professional season after entering the professional ranks at the age of 19. Known has a scorer and rebounder, Malone was one of the premiere big men in the 1970-s and early 1980-s. His star studded career included 12 all-star selections, 3 league MVP awards and 1 NBA Championship. In San Antonio, he played a different role than what was expected when he was a vital part of team offenses and defenses. As a Spur, Malone was expected to help push the burgeoning team to the Promised Land and to assist superstar David Robinson with his ascendancy to basketball greatness.

Moses Malone-s one season in San Antonio became the final entry in the legend-s career. Signed in August, Malone played only 17 games and limited minutes in the majority of those games. Many insiders felt that the great player could still battle strength wise with the other players but the speed of the game had made him a living dinosaur. At 39, Malone could no longer run in the fast break and his offense moves were often truncated and choppy. His high scoring game of the 17 game run was a 12 point performance against the Boston Celtics. In addition, defensively Malone only managed 3 blocks which was well under what was expected of a player who had close to 1900 career blocks entering the season. In the end, it is not hard to imagine that the presence of one of the greatest big men of all-time had a positive impact on David Robinson. After all, Robinson finished the campaign as the league MVP in his only season with Malone.
