Fans of the San Antonio Spurs have been spoiled in recent years. After the lean years the team experienced in the 80s with George Gervin on into the 90′s with David Robinson and the coaching carousel that ensued, the team was due for some luck. That luck just happens to go by the name of Tim Duncan.

1999 — The season may have been shortened by a lockout, but the Spurs went to work quickly once basketball commenced, putting together one of the most dominant postseason runs in NBA history by going 15 – 2.

2002 – 2003 — In what was initially thought to be a transitional year with David Robinson announcing his impending retirement at years end, the Spurs managed to win the whole thing on the strength of Duncan’s best individual season ever.

2004 – 2005 — With Robinson retired, the Spurs had a hole at center, but the brilliance of newly established stars Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili combined with the greatness of Duncan proved to be the best in the league.

2006 – 2007 — More of the same; the trio of Duncan, Gino and Parker was hitting on all cylinders and coasted to another championship.Take a look here to learn more: Parker willing to pay his insurance for ASVEL; Sabatini contacted Ginobili’s agent

Tony Parker is often in the news courtesy of his exploits on the basketball court — and occasionally for off the court reasons as well. The three time NBA Champion first broke onto the scene in 2001 as a rookie point guard for the San Antonio Spurs. He quickly established himself as the starter, supplanting Avery Johnson and Terry Porter for the role in the first 10 games of his rookie season.

As great as he was on the court, his life outside the court has been of much interest to the general public. His high-profile relationship with actress Eva Longoria set the lights of Hollywood onto San Antonio for a change. That relationship, and eventual marriage was not to last, sadly. Rumors circulated that Tony had been exchanging explicit texts with the wife of a former teammate, Eva promptly ended things shortly after.

As of recently, Tony has been in the news thanks to his outstanding play for France in the European Championships, resulting in an Olympic qualification for the French team at next years games in London. Look for Tony to have a bounce back season this year as the Spurs try to rebound from a disappointing playoff loss last season.

The coach of the year award in the National Basketball Association is a very prestige award. This award has been given out annually since the 1962-1963 basketball season. Only forty coaches has received this trophy named after Red Auerbach. The trophy received his name as an honor after he led the Celtics to nine championships. The coach of the year is selected by a panel of Canadian and American sportswriters who for whom they feel are the first, second and third place selections.
The 2002-2003 season head coach was the San Antonio Spurs Head Coach, Gregg Popovich. He began his career in the NBA in 1988 as top assistant to Head Coach Larry Brown who was then coaching the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich continued to work under his close friend and mentor Larry Brown until 1992. After returning to Spurs in 1994 he lead the team to four championships in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. With the Spurs, Popovich has won over 600 regular season games, 100 playoff games and is currently tied in third place with Larry Brown for all-time playoff game winnings. It has been said that Gregg Popovich is a given for the Basketball Hall of Fame.

There were some fans out there who loved the Alamodome, and there were others who hated it. Some loved the “wide open feel” of the stadium, others felt like, while it was a step up from the HemisFair Arena, the spurs were still playing ball in a football stadium. Regardless of your feelings, you have to admit that the San Antonio Spurs came into their own while there.

Moving to the Alamodome in 1992, the Spurs were a former ABA team that always had potential, but never really seemed to be able to get over that barrier to being one of the elite teams. Things started to change when the Spurs drafted former Navy submariner David Robinson. When Robinson and the Spurs moved to the ‘Dome in 1992, they were a team that were starting to make waves. By 1995 they had reached their first Confrence Final in 12 seasons. Things really picked up when the team drafted Tim Duncan in 1997. By the 1999, the Spurs were hoisting their first Championship banner to the rafters at the Alamodome. Though they never again raised a championship banner at the Alamodome (thanks to the Lakers dominance at the beginning of the decade), the Spurs time at the Alamodome set the stage for three more Championships (and counting) that have been won since moving to the AT&T Center in 2002.

For a team that has won the NBA Title four out of the last 12 years and currently has the best record in the NBA by roughly seven games, the San Antonio Spurs continue to get little to know respect. When you first learn to play basketball by playing on home basketball equipment,www.hoopaids.com/, you learn that consistent winning is the most important thing. And while year after year the Spurs do nothing but win, they are perennial “also ran’s”. It’s as if people are already pooh-poohing this solid season by saying that they are just setting themselves up to the Lakers, who themselves haven’t been playing great ball this season.

Dismissing a potential 65 win team as “also-ran’s” is going to be dangerous for any team who happens to meet the Spurs in the playoffs. You can’t ignore a team that has one of the best triple threats in all of basketball: Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker. While the so called “Big Three” in Miami has many a growing pain’s this season, the other Big Three in San Antonio have had another great season. This is a team that has the potential to go all the way this year, despite what the critics have to say.

A lot of journalists are speculating that Tony Parker is playing perhaps his best basketball in recent years due in part to his divorce from Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria. In fact, in a recent game between the Spurs and the Nuggets, Parker scored 30 points (on 11-of-15 shooting) to help clench the 110-97 victory over the Denver team. The online Bleacher Report commented that “when every pundit and NBA genius had written the Spurs off for an aging washed up team the Spurs have answered with a remarkably pristine first half of the season” with Tony Parker having “sparkled as the leading and offensive force a contending team needs.”In the court of popular opinion many athletes struggling through a divorce also struggle in their sport of choice; but in Parker’s case (where he could have easily made any lackluster performance a result of his personal life), he seems to have instead determined that focus needs to be placed on his caliber of play instead of his personal life.Parker recently told People magazine that he’s “taken refuge in basketball,” and it seems he’s a man of his word (at least when it comes to sport). He went on to tell People that “it’s been essential to be successful on the court,” and fans are no doubt thrilled that although he was not successful in marriage, he held to this success as evidenced by his averaging 12.8 points in the team’s previous six games. Our take on all of this? It’s a new year and the divorce is old news so we’ll stay focused on the “refuge in basketball” that seems to be bringing Parker a year of successes

It was released today that San Antonio’s Tiago Splitter has strained his right plantaris muscle. Splitter’s career with the San Antonio Spurs has been rocky to begin with. Originally drafted in 2007, Splitter was chosen by the Spurs as the 28th pick (overall) in the first round. However, the player would go onto resign his contract with Saski Baskonia, and as a result, Splitter wouldn’t join the spurs until the 2010 season. Now the player must undergo a seven, maybe ten, day rehabilitation program. Once the NBA star has completed the program, the decision about when he can return to the team will be made.
